Hand Carved Cedar Canoes & a Potlatch
For the first time in over 100 years, Native Americans and First Nations People, paddling in hand carved canoes are coming to Blaine to camp, celebrate, and Potlatch with the Blaine community in the spirit of “Peace and Healing”.
On Friday July 24, at approximately 1:00 PM, three canoes from the Lummi Nation, Semiahmoo Nation, and the G’ana’k’w Canoe Family of Haida and Tlingit will arrive at Telescope Beach on Marine Drive in Blaine, Washington. The canoes will follow the protocols associated with landing in another nation’s territory. This ceremony is brief, approximately one hour in length.
After 6:00 PM on Saturday July 25th, there will be singing, dancing, story telling, and gift distribution in the Potlatch tradition. This activity will last approximately two to three hours.
The public is welcome to both events, and there is no charge.
We suggest that visitors, as needed, bring a folding chair.
